Internships at Dowell Group

Internships at The Dowell Group

Dowell Group offers an internship program to enable students to gain real-world experience and insight into our field. All our interns are treated with the same respect and professionalism as if they were full-time employees.  By offering an internship program, Dowell Group is helping to "pay it forward" to the next generation of CPAs.

The college internship at Dowell Group is modeled after the same program that we use to train full-time recent graduates as Staff Accountants. During this program, the intern will perform many of the same services that a full-time newly hired accounting graduate would perform, which will provide a realistic experience to the intern of what employment will be like at a larger local CPA firm in general, and at Dowell Group, in particular.

The internship program will typically begin in January and will run for through March to early April. Part-time or full-time (during spring break or holidays) will be accommodated. This is a paid internship, based on an hourly rate of compensation. The work will be performed on-site at our Palatine, IL office. Each intern will be assigned a mentor.

The Staff Accountant will work primarily in the Tax Group, with secondary assignments in the Accounting and Audit Groups. The qualified individual will be someone who is working on an undergraduate degree with a major in accounting. The individual will receive one to two days of general training on firm software and processes.

Following general training, the individual will participate in projects in our practice groups. We anticipate that those projects will include:

  • Tax Group - will include exposure to preparing corporate income tax returns and exposure to preparing individual and fiduciary income tax returns, utilizing tax software.
  • Audit Group - will include exposure to a variety of basic audit procedures, including the testing of transactions and preparing work papers to support the testing process, as well as assistance in preparing audited financial statements. Audit clients may include industrial companies, service businesses, and nonprofits.
  • Accounting Group - will include posting to the general ledger, analyzing general ledger entries, reconciling accounts, making adjusting journal entries, reconciling bank statements, and preparing and analyzing trial balances. Prepare and analyze trial balances
